چکیده
Successful conservation of long-lived species requires reliable understanding long-term trends and historical baselines. We present a framework for evaluating abundance outcomes marine by integrating local ecological knowledge (LEK), monitoring, computer simulation, tested on case-study heavily exploited green turtles (Chelonia mydas) in the Eastern Pacific. Models fit to LEK monitoring data indicate that turtle is increasing, but only after ?40 years safeguarding species’ nesting foraging habitats Mexico. However, current at ?60% baseline levels historic population structure has not been reestablished, indicating need sustained, actions. demonstrate potential linking science provide critical information conservation, establishing reference baselines gauging status with perspective, while promoting equitable sustainable futures.

Knowledge Extraction from the Neural ‘Black Box’ in Ecological Monitoring
Phytoplankton biomass within the Saginaw Bay ecosystem (Lake Huron, Michigan, USA) was characterized as a function of select physical/chemical indicators. The complexity and variability of ecological systems typically make it difficult to model the influences of anthropogenic stressors and/or natural disturbances. Here, Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) were developed to model chlorophyll a con...
متن کاملIntegrating Soil Ecological Knowledge into Restoration Management
The variability in the type of ecosystem degradation and the specificity of restoration goals can challenge restorationists’ ability to generalize about approaches that lead to restoration success. The discipline of soil ecology, which emphasizes both soil organisms and ecosystem processes, has generated a body of knowledge that can be generally useful in improving the outcomes of restoration d...
متن کاملDesigning and Evaluating Bamboo Harvesting Methods for Local Needs: Integrating Local Ecological Knowledge and Science
Dendrocalamus hamiltonii, a large, clump-forming bamboo, has great potential to contribute towards poverty alleviation efforts across its distributional range. Harvesting methods that maximize yield while they fulfill local objectives and ensure sustainability are a research priority. Documenting local ecological knowledge on the species and identifying local users' goals for its production, we...

We analyzed fishermen’s local ecological knowledge (LEK) about the feeding habits, trophic interactions, habitats, fishing grounds, migration, and reproduction of nine coastal fishes in Búzios Island, southeastern Brazilian coast. We interviewed 39 fishermen using standardized questionnaires. Fishermen’s LEK on habitat use and trophic interactions for the studied fishes agreed with the scientif...
متن کاملCommunity-Based Conservation and Traditional Ecological Knowledge: Implications for Social-Ecological Resilience
Our review highlights how traditional ecological knowledge influences people's adaptive capacity to socialecological change and identifies a set of mechanisms that contribute to such capacity in the context of community-based biodiversity conservation initiatives. Twenty-three publications, including twenty-nine case studies, were reviewed with the aim of investigating how local knowledge, comm...
